Saturday, April 7, 2012 - Tasted side-by-side, single-blind with 2000 Cos d'Estournel. Aerated in decanter 6 hours. Very youthful dark ruby core, no sign of age. My friend arranged this dinner as a kind of experiment. These two wines had 96 points the former was scored by Parker, the latter, by Spectator/Suckling. Interestingly (or not), the reviewers were polar opposites (i.e. Parker gave the Cos 92, Spectator gave it 96, vice versa for the Pape Clement). I have to agree with Parker on these two wines, the Pape Clément being the superior of the two, and not by a small margin, either. For me, it came down to purity of fruit and an honest sense of balance and harmony. No need for descriptors here, that's been covered pretty well in the TN's already. I think Suckling had it exactly backwards on the scoring of these two wines, just my opinion. A really classy drop that I will make an effort to enjoy again whenever possible. highly recommended, drink thru 2026
