Monday, July 7, 2014 - Appearance: Showing transparency, but still fairly deep. Not showing a lot of age.
Nose is very Châteauneuf. Ripe and grenache. It's rare for me to see the provençal herbs often reported, but I can in this one. It's on the way to a complex tertiary stage, but not really there yet. To me, the colour indicates there's a way to go.
Palate is very pleasing up front. There's still some tannin, slightly hard in the way of a lot of these wines. I like to see some, but it will be a while before it reduces to my taste. I can understand those who see excessive alcohol in this wine. The aftertaste of dry tannin seems exaggerated by the alcohol. But I think there's enough acid to save the day in the medium/long term.
I think it's tricky to pick the ideal time to drink these wines. This one will take a few years. I'm pleased to notice that the last bit left in the glass seems better balanced, and I think this bodes well for the next bottle, probably in 3 years.
