91 Points

Thursday, February 19, 2009 - Tasting and Dinner with Laurent Ponsot of Domaine Ponsot (Harbour Grill, Hilton Hotel, Singapore): Very nice, but very young still. Nose was a bit reductive at first, and the flavours were a little shut-in. It took some time to blossom though, and by the end of the tasting, it was showing very nicely, with lifted scents of sweet, dark cherries perfumed with fresh flowers and a nice, high-toned minerality. There was also a little underlayer of rich earthiness which should come up a bit more as the wine evovles. The palate had good weight and was marked, initially, with tight, grainy tannins. But as it opened up, I got nice cherry scents, a touch of cola and more perfumy notes. Balance was decent, but it was certainly not the freshest of Burgs. Finsih was shortish at first, but seemed to stretch out and lengthen as the wine took on air, and showed bright cherry flavours along with bittersweet herbs and a touch of menthol. It should improve with time in the bottle but, like many of the 2006s on show, I am not sure that this will be the longest lived of Ponsot's wines. 90-91 for now.
