2022 Domaine Ledogar Carignan Blanc

Wednesday, April 24, 2024 - Carignan blanc is an unusual grape, a mutation of carignan gris that was used for blending in Languedoc and Spain but is now disappearing. There are two Ledogar cuvees of carignan blanc; we had the less expensive Vin de France with the butterfly label. Light color. Slightly musky aroma, with a fuzzy suggestion of geranium leaf. High acidity. Mineral. Herbal. Saline. The wine is too young -- it was much more rounded and approachable on the second day. On our trip through Languedoc, we drank several wines made from grenache gris and concluded that this is one's the world's underappreciated grapes. On the basis of this brief exposure to carignan blanc, I am not yet willing to conclude that its obscurity is undeserved.
