Friday, July 12, 2013 - Pop and pour; Ruby with just a hint of bricking, still quite a youthful color but appropriate for its age; nose is classic old school bordeaux with earth, cedar, integrated red and black fruits, undertones of minerality (common in St. Julien), no overt vegetal notes but just a hint of mushroom or truffle; palate is medium-full bodied, still quite structured with juicy tannins (not dried out or harsh), good cherry and blackberry fruit, very fresh overall with good acidity, nice delineation of flavors, some clean minerality on the palate as well, moderate complexity; finish is medium-long length with some slight tobacco. This is an excellent wine with a real sense of place: has the St. Julien medium-full body but also elegance, great acidity, crisp transitions between different phases of the palate, great balance, and distinct minerality. The only thing it lacks is the little bit extra complexity and unique character that the best St. Julien chateaux have (Leoville Barton, Poyferre, etc). Still, this is excellent value and a well made wine drinking at its early window. Should drink well over the next 15 years. 92
Update: With 30 minutes of air this knits together well, a lovely wine. Nose is starting to develop some lovely vegetal character with some asparagus. Glad I have more.
