88 Points

Friday, June 18, 2010 - After a short decant, aromas of strawberry, raspberry, cranberry, cherry, what reminds me of a wet wood pile, mushroomy forest floor, cola, a hint of oak. Really big aromas (don't need to put your nose that close to the glass to get them). Focused cherry, cranberry, vanilla, and spice with quite a bit of acidity. Nice balance. Great aftertaste. It does come across a bit austere at the finish, which is a little annoying, and the alcohol shows through a bit. Also, there's a little stemmy bitterness at the finish that is sort of a turn-off. These wines need a lot of air, and additional air improved the focus, but not the finish.
The next day, the profile was a little more classic CA pinot (black cherry, forest floor, oak). Overall, while tasty and high quality, this is a little disappointing at this point, especially after having the San Mateo and the Fairview Ranch Syrah, which were excellent. I wouldn't call this a qpr either, since you can find 2007 Oregon pinots with a similar profile for much less. That said, I liked this wine, and I'll open another after they age a little longer.
