92 Points

Sunday, February 14, 2010 - 92++ Completely closed upon opening. Two hours decant later there's a delicious, wonderfully balanced, surprisingly approachable, elegant, if not particularly complex or terroir driven wine. Plenty of cherry and cranberry fruit, with licorice, bay leaf, thyme and pepper. Faint minerality. Moderate acidity and tannins. Medium-short finish. Even after four hours, I was thinking: "OK. 2007. Lovely wine. But how much Chateauneuf character is really there.... Is this maybe too polished and enjoyable, especially for such a traditional producer...." A small amount left. Sealed. The next evening, over 24 hours later, a very different animal. Red fruits are still there, but so much deeper and richer. Some black raspberry and maybe red current to complement the cherry and cranberry. Screaming anise!! Bay leaf, eucalyptus, black and white pepper, touch of cola and cinnamon. Very spicy. Iron and hot stones. More rustic. Visceral. Stronger tannins. Palate staining. Long finish. Much less smooth, and much more interesting. A bit too hot.... The potential is there. Will be interesting to how this (and other '07 S. Rhones) develop over time....
