Monday, September 29, 2008 - 45-min decant. Gold/yellow color with some glass-clinging weight and viscosity. Smells grassy; there's an ivory soap component, like when you accidentally swallow a peace of the white soap, what it tastes like is a little bit what I smell; there's also definitely a semi-sweet fruit here that I can't put my finger on, ah and a fried and slightly burnt tempera shrimp smell too. (I think this would go great with something like that.) For the fruit, it could be canned pear-halves in sugar water. The nose keeps inviting me back for more - very nice! This is really damn good. It actually most reminds me of the 2005 Ridge Chardonnay that got Wine of the Year #2 from Spectator last year, but that will probably cost you $85- on auction, while this is 1/10 the price. Ok, it's not quite as high-caliber (but it's close) as the Ridge, but it does bring a lot of the same lovely qualities: a very heavy and creamy mouth-feel; pure unadulterated core of fruit; balanced acidity (not as high as most NZ SB's though); finish, while not quite as long and extracted, does offer similar lemon/butter flavors; just all and all super-delicious. Beyond these similarities, it differs on the palate with some additional green streaks that pop up here and there; sometimes I interpret these as minerality, while others I get various green veggies. All in all, this is the best value white I have experienced. I should buy a lot more, and soon.
