Sunday, April 8, 2012 - On Easter Sunday, decanted six hours. Hard to know what to make of this. To my palate, a modern, designer wine; intended to be ready for drinking at a young age. Deep, limpid, intense, very sweet, rich and agreeable; alcoholic but the alcohol is well integrated, and the fruit fully masks the spirit. An abiding impression of chocolate and fruit drops -- as it happens, we had no chocolate after Easter lunch, but this would have married well with dark chocolate peppermints! I simply don't know whether it will make old bones, and if it does, what it will taste like after say 40 years. But it certainly will never resemble the great ports of the 25 post-war years in my view. Nice to have a case of this in the cellar, but to burgeon my dwindling stocks of 1963-1970, I shall snap up any cases of good port from the best years pre-1971 which may come on the market, if they are in good condition and have reasonable provenance.
