89 Points

Sunday, November 8, 2009 - From 375mL: Clear. Bright light blue ruby body to a lighter pink ruby rim; demonstrates youthfulness with medium intensity and little color gradation. Clean on the nose, though quite tight. Lightly perfumed violet, mustard greens and dandelion aromas mingle with fig, strawberry and quiet spice notes of white pepper, cardamom and vanilla. On the palate, the wine is dry, with bright acid, well-integrated tannins leading to a soft mid-palate with supple body yet firm underpinning structure. The fruit characteristics are, as on the nose quite tight, suggesting that this wine has entered a dumb phase. Nonetheless, a green-ish aspect mingles with fresh geranium, red fruit, leaves, rust and dried mud. The finish is moderate, the alcohol is moderate plus, a bit off balance. This wine will balance and surely will show well over the next 2-6 years with proper cellaring. Wish I had another few bottles to cellar. I recommend this highly over-achieving Volnay.
