Saturday, August 6, 2011 - Loire Odyssey, Part II - the Reds (Imperial Treasure Super Peking Duck, Paragon): I really liked this. From oldish wines planted between 1967 and 1978, the wine had no pretensions to greatness, but was simply delicious. Clearly Gamay on the nose, this showed a whoosh of floral perfume followed by sweet scents of strawberries and dark cherries, some bramble and a little touch of savoury earth and game aromas - very attractive stuff. Mid to light-bodied on the palate, it showed dark cherry flavours on a savoury bed of game meat and earth laced through with very nice fresh, filigreed acidity and a frame of fine tannins. Decent finish was sprinkled with dried rose petals and a layer of ground Chinese herbs. Good stuff, and as would be expected, a lovely pairing with Peking Duck. Drinking very nicely now.
