Thursday, April 14, 2011 - Pierre Morey's maturing Monthélie has paved a way for itself at tastings. Twice have we found it interesting enough to order a few bottles. At home it's more complicated. The nose is dominated by burnt wood, spice, fudge and other quite apparent markers of oak. On the palate there's some richness, but it's also slightly hot, it lacks freshness and sports too much bitterness - like herbs, oak, bitter orange and rowanberries. A bit cloying, and sensitive to temperature, it certainly has a drinkability problem and doesn't leave the mouth cleansed. We really want to embrace this wine but we find it's not easy. Third bottle - and our final verdict is "over-oaked".
