Thursday, December 25, 2014 - Drunk from Magnum on Christmas Day 2014 at the Koala Bar - we tasted a collection of '78s in large formats for Christmas (and why wouldn't you!). The Lafite was definitely the favourite but I find myself describing it in terms of the negatives that it didn't exhibit. Unfortunately this vintage seems a little dried out now with any fragrance or fruit relatively short lived. The tannins tend to dominate and none of the wines posses the sweetness that old Bordeaux gets when its singing. This was not one of the recently released ex-Chateau batch so it will be interesting to see whether perfect provenance lifts the wine a notch. Don't get me wrong '78 Lafite is still very pleasant but the '60s and the '80s were definitely kinder to Bordeaux and it shows.
