Tuesday, April 26, 2011 - Nice dark but ever-so-slightly translucent ruby red in the glass, the nose on this wine starts slowly, but gains richness over time. I have a very hard time placing the smells, but they are delicious. Almost like a plum-strawberry jam reduction over dusty white pepper and vanilla. On the palate, deep plums remain, but the strawberry has disappeared and instead a slight raspberry overtone appears in the background. The plums were evidently stewed in their skins, as there is a fair amount of bitterness here. There is some spiciness, still, as well, but it is more like red chilies and roasted red bell peppers. I was expecting a fair amount of tannin, but there was really very little. There also seems to be a lack of depth and complexity. The wine seems a little hollow to me, and the finish is fairly short and laced with way too much alcohol. Disclaimer: I have very little experience with Zinfandel. I bought this expressly because I thought it would be a good way to try a reliable Zin for reference. I'm not convinced I succeeded. At $12 for the split, I wouldn't really be too interested in trying this again. Take my score with a grain of salt, though, and listen to those with more Zin experience.
