Friday, June 5, 2015 - I will be upfront and say that I am a Shafer HSS homer and I am biased. It is my deserted island wine ahead of SQN, Krug and any Burg or Bordeaux. When I name a WOTY it's really WOTYNNHSS as in wine-of-the-year-not-named-hillside-select, otherwise it will be boring and the same every year. But, that being said, I try to taste wine without prejudice, and in an attempt to find faults with this HSS, I came up empty. It is not as upfront luxurious as the '02, but it was more 4-dimensional. Not only was every sip layered in flavors, but when popped an poured, each sip was different from the last. One sip was focused on black and blue fruits, the next was all about graphite and scorched earth and leather, followed by a meatiness I love, and later there was dark chocolate, cherry compote and roasted espresso bean. Everything wrapped with subtle oak that was present but not distracting. It's like great sex where the sex is different each time. It's that good. Drank this to celebrate the birthdays of two great friends and that's how it should be.
