93 Points

Saturday, May 22, 2004 - Dark ruby red. Explosive nose of bright ripe fruit, oak, and damp earth right out of the gate, with all components showing excellent integration and balance. In the mouth, a lively mid-palate of dark fruit, spice, saddle leather, and damp soil, followed by ripe tannins and lingering clay minerals coating the mouth on the finish. Something about this classic St. Julien melding of dark ripe fruit, oak, and minerals taps into some visceral, deep-seated genetic fount that eliminates any possibility of real objectivity on this wine. If I had to be objective, I would rate this one a solid 93, subjectively a 96. What a beautiful expression of the St. Julien terroir. This wine is drinking much better than one could reasonably expect at this early stage.
