93 Points

Monday, July 4, 2016 - Richebourg Dinner (Yan, National Gallery, Singapore): Very similar impressions to the last bottle I tried a year ago. Very good, but not quite great. This was an unusually big and obvious for a Fontaine-Gagnard CBM, starting with a sweet nose of daisy flowers, ripe apple fruit, honeyed pears and sweet cream aromas, with liberal lashings of butter at the side, and just that bit of seashell mineral at the ends. The palate had a nice lemony freshness and acidity of the vintage, but it clearly leans towards the voluptuous side, with full flavours of cream and honey and sweet lemony fruit, just undercut by a nice stream of mineral and acidity and just a twist of lemon zest at the finish. If anything, this bottle felt a bit clumsier than the last one. It needs some time to lose its puppy fat and put on some complexity. It will make a very nice wine with time, but I do not think it will ever be a truly great one. Try again in 5 years.
