Wednesday, August 26, 2015 - I've had an epiphany: food wines are different from "serious" wines. This is just a great food wine, nice oaky nose and great acid on the palate with a solid base of tannins and a nice dose of fruit. Food wines are like comfort food. 50 + 15 + 15 + 8.

    8/27/2015 12:51:00 PM - I totally agree that there's a difference between between "food" wines and "cocktail" wines (ie, those that are better without food). I'd argue, though, that the "food" wines are more "serious" than the plush slightly-sweet over-oaked cocktail wines...

    8/29/2015 8:07:00 PM - Oh yes, I completely agree and I try to avoid those sort of wines. But I had in mind something different. Within the world of the balanced low-alcohol wines that I like, there are wines that you taste on their own and try to make precise descriptions of, and then there are wines that don't do too well under that regime, but are a wonderful accompaniment to the right food, and so you should write the note with the food in mind. I suppose it's like the difference between serious and popular music or art (whatever those adjectives mean).

    8/30/2015 3:05:00 PM - I see what you mean. Like, Petrus '82 is undeniably great, in a very different way from this Vieux Robin '05. They serve different purposes. The Petrus shows you the power and complexity that wine can achieve, while the Vieux Robin is more pedestrian but still very good: it's a lovely accompaniment to a steak off the grill. And neither of these is a "cocktail" wine...
