Sunday, August 7, 2016 - A better wine than the 2004 Villa Maria Reserve Merlot I just finished, though also made in a similar very modern, New World style. Deep, dark colour. Crème de cassis, dark plums and blackberries on bouquet with lashes of milk chocolatey oak. There's also a 'cooling' cedary, graphite element that speaks of Cabernet Sauvignon. On palate, it's a big wine, broad shouldered but very svelte and seamless. There's that cassis, dark cherries, blackberries with some gunmetal, moccacino, liquorice and iron. Not as touch of the secondary (I suspect it'll live forever under its screwcap, evolving very slowly). For me there's a bit too much creamy oak on palate and alcoholic heat on the finish (14.5%) and it's fairly 'one note', unidimensional. I'm sure fans of this style will like it a lot more than me ...
