Sunday, February 11, 2007 - My first experience with this wine. On opening the nose was primary and dominated by new oak and the palate was closed but had an incredible depth of fruit. I double decanted it and 2 hours later the nose and the wine were much more integrated. The nose still had the smell of toast but in addition had the grave character you would expect in La Mission. Leather, tar and hot rock were all there. The palate had great balance and while the wine is medium-bodied it has dense fruit and ripe tannins. The finish is incredibly long. This wine spun my cap. Is this what the '85 tasted like in its youth?
