2001 Château La Mission Haut-Brion

Community Tasting Note

Likes this wine:

Sunday, October 21, 2018 - 13.5% alcohol. Embossed bottle with distinctive lilac-coloured collar sleeve. Exemplary cork with virtually no wine penetration. Decanted an hour ahead (possibly might have benefited from more air time).
Deep colour with no sign of ageing. The nose is not the most intense, but it is balanced and civilised, with ripe blackcurrants and some confectionery notes. The mouth is better still, displaying the flavours promised by the nose and adding a superb creamy mouthfeel. Very good grip but no protruding tannins; the oak is fully integrated.
A highly civilised Pessac favouring balance and style over extraction. This can improve for a further five to ten years and then keep for ten more years, I would guess.
I got an exceptional deal on this wine 15 years ago, but I have to admit that it would not be a repeat purchase at current prices.
