Monday, April 9, 2012 - The Vilmart Grand Cellier is one of the best non-vintage value champagnes on the market. What makes this champagne so great is the level of precision, balance, and nuances of flavor that show themselves on the palate. This is so fresh and lively with a delicassy that is rare among champagnes at any price level. The flavors include birght citrus, apples, peaches, flowers, a touch of yeast, a little bit of spice (from the oak), and nice minerality. This is certainly a chardonnay driven champagne and I have yet to run into anyone who does not like this. The only issue here is with price. Due to Vilmart's popularity, this champagne is usually priced in the $60 to $75 range, which is approaching the price point of leading vintage champagnes from other producers. However, if you can find this for $50 or less, it is a wonderful value.
