Monday, June 28, 2010 - Wowza, can't believe how much this has transformed and improved since last year. Looks like the Rhys folks have finally nailed this vineyard, after all. This is showing some serious spine as a result of the stems, but that's the only structural element that's sticking out at this point. The tannins are virtually imperceptible. And that's not because there's so much fruit that it's either sweetening or smothering the tannin; the fruit here is pretty but refined and slender to the point where it's more Burgundian than Californian, even by the standards of Rhys. An impeccably finessed, silky, Audrey Hepburn type of pinot. But even that doesn't entirely convey what's so captivating about this. It's hard to put my finger on, but something about the stalkiness energizing material that otherwise seems totally suave and serene gives this an overall style that's more than a little reminiscent of DRC.
