Sunday, July 20, 2014 - not ready but enjoyable. if you open now it demands a few solid hours decant. the longer the better.
velvety is an overused term, but this wine earns it.
dense blackberry, chocolate, and espresso, but this is far from a fruit bomb. right now the mineral and savory notes dominate the palate. graphite, tar, sanguine.
I left 1/4 of the bottle with the cork in overnight. day two the wine is especially pleasant. still lots of tannin and structure but the fruit is more expressive while none of the palate lost any of its luster from the night before.
this was a gift, but given the price of this bottle, whether you have only one in your cellar or a whole case, I'd give it another year at minimum. you can drink this now and still enjoy it but WOW is it going to be better in a few years! Patience.

7/20/2014 2:48:00 PM - Yep, Insignia has a good track record of getting better with age. I have 2 of those and no other vintage, but the price is very high, so probably won't buy any more. I'll let these two age indefinitely and hope for the best. Its seems that Napa has some insanely priced wines that never seem to go down, even in 2011. The few high end wines are choice, but will hold almost all of them, but value is actually better in Bordeaux which is hard to believe. The Insignia of 2007 was priced about the same place where the 2010 Pontet-Canet is now and higher than the 2009 Pontet-Canet. Still insignia will age like a Leoville Las Cases and still has a more attractive price tag.
It is fun to drink these gifted treasures, but does tend to open Pandora's box. Waiting for the right moment to pop the cork on a single 2007 Staglin. It has great CT reviews and I don't want to wait too long. When Napa does a wine right it really is heavenly.
