2002 Chateau Musar

Thursday, October 27, 2016 - I really can't decide whether this wine is riddled with flaws, or this is how it's meant to taste. Either way, this is absolutely delicious, superbly enjoyable, and for that I commend the winemaker.

Decanted for about 2 hours, fascinatingly it put on weight when aired rather than relaxing. Slightly hot, cooked aromas - dark kirsch cherries, semi-dried fruits (almost pruney), vanilla and a certain spiciness. As I say, these could be perceived as flaws (and maybe they are), but the refreshing acidity cuts through the lot perfectly. Did they plan to take all the best bits of Claret, Rioja and the Rhone and discard the rest? I'm struggling for a comparison, but that's as close as I/my palate memory gets.

I can't help but thinking this is what all wine wants to be when it grows up. And so young! This could go for decades, surely?

11/20/2016 2:22:00 PM - Well if it's 'absolutely delicious and utterly enjoyable', then by definition those characteristics you like couldn't be flaws - the might be for someone else, who would dislike them (flaws are only flaws if they make a wine unpleasant for the drinker, surely?) - but as tasting wine is utterly individual, this sounds like the wine for you (and, dare I say, me - I love Musar and have done for 20 years) - so trust your judgement! And clearly you speak from knowledge - thanks for this excellent note - and I must open another '02 soon.
