Monday, August 1, 2011 - Out of the bottle this has a funky nose of tar, rubber, cola, heat. A 2008 Mt Eden blew it away out of the bottle for its elegance, fruit and finish. However, with an hour of air, the BF starts to come around. Still shows cola on the nose, but the fruit starts to show up. Getting better with more air, and showing it is a bigger (but not better) wine than the Mt. Eden right now - but the finish is a bit to short and dry. Question is how it will age, but it seems to have the stuffing, so hopefully it will mellow and develop a better finish. 2nd day this had settled a bit and lost some of the funk on the nose, now showing some fruit and mint. Solid wine on the palate, although the finish still a bit short and hot. Overall an improvement and more pleasant than yesterday, but the Mt. Eden still the better wine of the two (although not clear how the Mt. Eden will age). Worth laying a few of these down given some decent history in strong vintages, but expect the overblown style and hope to be surprised with something more balanced. A-?
