93 Points

Wednesday, December 21, 2016 - Dark red/purple color. The nose was consistent with the 1991 and 1996, but it was more youthful with dark fruit, herbs, tobacco, and a light brett note. The palate displayed moderate plus intensity with blackberry and dark cherry intermingled with tobacco and brett. There is enough acidity and well-managed tannins to provide a youthful profile, but it was balanced with a rounded mouthfeel. Overall, it was clear that this was a Chateau Montelena wine because of the refined profile coupled with some bretty complexity.
