Saturday, April 25, 2020 - Opened 2 hours earlier. Ruby with maturing rim. Slightly brambly fruit, licorice, and soil. Light to medium body. Lean red and black fruit with minimal sweetness. The core of this is the screaming 1996 acidity, which gives more of the backbone than the moderate remaining tannins. Earth throughout. Rather old fashioned, uncompromising Gevrey which has inched forward over the years and improved, if ever so grudgingly. This wine would make the Fourriers in this part of the world blanch since it is so antithetical to that cheery, fruit-laden, accessible style. What can I say but that there is a place for both.

This held up very well overnight. All of that acidity keeps things fresh, and it even gained some breadth.

4/25/2020 8:30:00 PM - "Old fashioned" depends on when you are dating from. The very (too) heavy saignée that Naddef practiced was actually rather modern for the time.
