Wednesday, February 5, 2020 - Two visits to Waiheke Island (Easter 2019 and New Year's 2020) (Auckland, NZ): Served by me double blind. Dark ruby with a touch of ochre. An ethereal and beautiful bouquet of black plums, raspberries, mixed spices, dark cherries, earth and dried herbs. The fruit aromas a mixture of ripe, opulent fresh fruit and some preserved and dry fruit. With time in the glass vibrant rose and dark floral perfumes emerged. Simon described the bouquet as “transcending savoury, yet primary”. On palate, he said it was “one of the most supple, plush and silky Burgundies … with almost a New World edge”. The ripe fruit and polish of this wine is reminiscent of the New World but – for me - the structure, complexity and detail is all excellent Grand Cru Burgundy. Very complete. One of my wines of the year. Still fairly young-seeming, I expect it to drink in this phase for 10+ years.
