2002 Dominus Estate

93 Points

Monday, April 4, 2016 - Rated 93 points only for where it is now, not for where it will be in about 10 years. There is an absolutely purity and balance here to suggest this will be a stunner in 10 years. If you are looking for the '94 Dominus, you won't find it in the '02 vintage. First off, there is no trace of brett in this wine like there is in the '94. Secondly, the ripe vintage of '02 is definitely evident at the moment. While there is a Bordeaux element with the herbaceous nose and finish, I would never pick this as Bordeaux blind due to the touch of vanillin, creme de cassis, and sweetness on the finish. Nevertheless, it has a great nose and finish. I'm just used to Dominus being a dead ringer for Bordeaux and I didn't experience it tonight. Glad I have a few more in the cellar, but will not touch them for another decade.
