Saturday, January 6, 2024 - It took about a hour to open up after double decanting for sediments. At first it was closed and sort of muted, but then it came back to life.
Color was dark garnet with bricking. Typical Shiraz nose with blackberries and plums, and a hint of oak.
Very nice acidity, lots of black fruits here, cocoa beans, plums, wet forest floor, licorice-like notes; grippy tannins, balanced vanilla ending. Leathery notes throughout.
I know the description seems pretty textbook-like - because this is a textbook Aussie Shiraz. However, this was nuanced and complex, with tertiary notes coming out but with still a lot of vibrancy and freshness in it. I would say at peak, but could go on for a few years more. Truly enjoyable and another masterpiece from Elderton.
