95 Points

Saturday, July 13, 2013 - Pop and pour and followed for several hours. Drunk warmer than optimal. Black cherry, plum, forest floor, caramel, herbs, violets, cassis, smoke, and wood on the nose. Black cherry, blackberry, tart cherry, vanilla, licorice, herbs, dark chocolate, coffee, and earth on the palate. Really nice freshness, underlying tannins, super long finish (several minutes). I was impressed that this could be big but still so fresh. Hopefully it gains complexity over the next 3-5 years. Would buy again at its original price.
Compared to the 2002 Shafer Hillside Select (rated the same) earlier this year, the Shafer was more luxurious textured and sweeter. The Quilceda was lighter, fresher, and had a better finish. More importantly, I wanted to drink another glass of the Quilceda, while I was sated with one of the Shafer. Both were delicious, but also pretty oaky and alcoholic.
Note that this wine didn't change much over the first ten hours. At ten, it seemed to open up more and was really delivering. After a day in the fridge, it came out a bit richer, but also noticeably more alcoholic. I liked it better on day 1.
