Sunday, December 31, 2017 - Drank this wine over two days with family on New Year’s eve and on new year’s day. I was a bit concerned as this didn’t seem like a wine to age for 14 years and the 2003 vintage was extremely hot, which made some flabby wines. Having said that, the bottle had been stored in temperature controlled cellars since acquiring it in the mid-00’s. The wine was lovely. Wonderful but slightly muted burgundy nose of tea, red fruits, smokey bacon. The colour was unusually dark with little amber on the edges. On the mouth, it was medium bodied, a bit monolithic but over time delivering lovely spicy pinot flavours with a mix of red fruits and secondary flavours (tea, truffles, a bit bacon). A bit more intensity and a longer finish would have made it delivery even more pleasure. On the second day, the wine was wonderful. It had opened up and offered spicier exotic notes in a more structured palate, while retaining the flavours from the day before. This suggests it could keep longer and perhaps improve for a few years. But why wait?
