91 Points

Wednesday, May 25, 2011 - This was on the shelf at the bar last night so decided to fire it open and pour it around. I know it is way early but the Clos de Fourches a month or so back was so utterly delicious that I thought it would be interesting to see where this one was at currently. Of the 5 bottlings of the Mugnier Marechale this one (oddly I think) must reminded me of full-fledged Nuits. Certainly it has been brought up on this board that people have seen Mugnier style have the upperhand versus the nature of the vineyard (at least in comparison to the Favieley bottlings of Marechale.) This was dark in color, actually quite dark in color, and had a forceful dark-fruited nose replete with earth, iron, pumpernickel crust and black peppercorn. The palate is really wound up but it definitely runs much, much darker in the fruit profile than I have experienced from his other bottlings of Marachale. Acidity is bracing at this point and the tannins are substantial. In short it was somewhat hard to get a clear picture of this wine right now but I think it is going to be very, very good and show the denser, darker, powerful side of Nuits. This all being said if you got comfortable with the $60ish price tag for this wine prepare to gird your loins.
