Thursday, November 26, 2020 - First of three bottles.
Purchased at auction in London.
Excellent top neck fill level with cork and capsule in excellent condition given its age.
Decanted just prior to serving as I was unsure of its condition.
Well settled and beautiful hue for a 99 year old bottle of wine...More like a 30-40 year old bottle.
Initial trapped aromas blew off quite rapidly and revealed a classic Medoc wine still in excellent condition.
Evolved earthy, forest floor, decaying aromas, tobacco leaves. Remarkably alive for its age, it continued to hold up and evolve for several hours.
At this point the acidity comes through and you would never guess that this was a wine from a very warm growing season. Amazing depth of flavor with spicy elements and cigar box aromas. Likely slightly elevated VA but not at a distracting level. Aromas suggesting ashes of aromatic trees.
Long, clean finish combining acidity and these spicy/empyromatic notes.
Just amazing...
