Friday, January 11, 2019 - Brought as my backup bottle to dinner at La Piquette, my favorite French bistro in DC (with cassoulet and beef short ribs - the dinner bottle was an '03 Pegau Reservee), I ran into some other folks who had brought a magnum of '98 Canon la Gaffeliere as their byob, who graciously shared a glass with me, as it's one of my favorite right-bank Bordeaux. I offered to open the 2000 Smith to share with them, and I think they were quite pleased. This is just starting to hit a nice drinking window, and with a decent decant would likely have been outstanding. The noise didn't match up to the '03 Pegau, but this was really delicious. Sadly, I only have one more bottle of the 2000, but this Chateau has only gotten better and better since the mid- to late-90s, and I'm really looking forward to breaking into my case of the '05 Smith (in maybe another 5 or so years!). Everything that Parker and the other critics said about the 2000 Bordeaux vintage seems to be coming true, and then some!
