Sunday, March 15, 2015 - This monstrously intense "new-age BdM" is finally beginning to settle down and showing off what is absolutely loveable with the performing BdM's. In our World it means they briskly stride rather than prance with their built in elegance. And as we prefer purpousefulness to coloured feathers and debauchery, our position is quite clear regarding this wine. Secretly, this was our hope all along, as this case was bought on a whim, from one of the whimsical "pros' " random scores and a very convincing sales guy...
Colour: early bricking from a rich red colour.
Nose: still young with the odd whiff of tobacco and leather sneaking through the thick curtain of lush, pure, red fruit crowned by cherries. There is a diminishing dark-fruit-essence as well, just around the corner of the newly asphalted street. Restrained Californian in style but also showing off some (growing) Toscana-ism. One more reason to return to this wine within three yrs. (Only four btls to go, should've bought three cases.)
Palate: tannins M++, acids M++, body M. Elegant, rich, complex, layered animal etc with fabulous aromas emerging from tanned leather, used leather, unsmoked cigars and raw pipe tobacco. This is like saddels that still need to find their first horse, but faint, behind rich and lush fruit of clear cherries and other red aromas. Long, and showing off a muddled kind of minerality, as in the earthy character of better Chiantis. Very clear, very pure, very true. To love!
Used to think of this wine as a modern expression to quench our thirst of rich expressions, but it's really coming together nicely. As things are looking out now in our crystal balls, this will come in to being as a most distinguished gentleman. Just like the traditional BdM's of yore. Yay!
Wife: 92p, but expecting much development.
Home dinner, my homer tomato pasta sauce and Akiko's take on Wagyu with garlic, soy and black pepper. Wow!
