Friday, November 2, 2012 - I usually struggle with high alcohol fruit bombs from Mclaren Vale so I was pleasantly surprised to come across this delicious, well-judged 2003 from Kay Bros. Whilst it certainly has an abundance of sweet, ripe dark fruits, there are some confident notes of cigar and leather that really do add a savoury, earthy dimension. Tell-tale bouquet of eucalyptus, dried herbs and tar. The palate is full but smooth, the texture complements the fruit beautifully before silky sweet tannins and gentle acidity add emphasis and deference to the chocolatey finish. This wears its 15% alcohol discretely and was a great pairing with a hearty shepherd's pie. **** I kept a glass leftover in the fridge and had it four days after opening - fruit has given way to mushroom and root veg. Those who wish to drink on the fruit should do so soon.
