90 Points

Friday, June 24, 2011 - I scored a six-pack of this on the Internet for $30/bottle and usually I would age these but decided to pop one at this early stage. Well pop is not the right word as I was surprised this batch had a screw top. The other 2006 St Henri I had in my cellar had a cork so I find it interesting the Penfold's went with a screw top in a wine known for its ageablity.
Anyway dark purple core typical of shiraz and this was full wine that was all about the fruit, which is what makes this wine interesting is the lack of oak treatment. A dark boysenberry flavor coats the tongue and the tannins were surprisingly mellow for such a young wine. Another taster mentioned meaty and that is a good word to describe this wine.
