Thursday, October 27, 2022 - First of twelve from the second of two cases purchased at retail in 2021.

There was a lot of bottle variation in the first case. Only ten bottles were worth writing notes about, and only seven of those fell into the “very good” category. None hit the heights of my initial test bottle or the first bottle from the first case. This bottle bodes well for this case, but I still think this wine is simply getting too old to offer any positive consistency at this point. We’ll see.

Decanted upon PnP and served. Cork stained only on the end. Strong black and red fruits on the nose and palate, along with beautiful notes of truffle oil and some decaying leaves. A little dark chocolate covered cherry emerged with time in the decanter. Excellent mouthfeel, with ripe, resolving tannins and excellent energy and all around balance.

As much of a sucker as I am for the sort of truffle oil and chocolate covered cherry notes this bottle showed, there remained something a bit simple about it that barred it from a higher score. It was really a very nice wine, though. Full marks for satisfaction if not for excitement. You really can’t ask for more from a thirteen-year-old $23 USD Cru Bourgeois. 14% ABV (very good; above average; distinguished; compelling/***/16/91)

1/25/2023 3:38:00 PM - Hi Jake. I bought pretty much the last of what Binny's have of this wine. At $19.99 a bottle. There is certainly some bottle variation. I would say from very good to outstanding. I had covid at the end of last year and lost my taste for a month. So, once I got my taste back, I opened some very nice wine (including a 2005 Pavillon Rouge du Ch Margaux).

I have to tell you this particular wine (if it is a decent bottle) is on par with some $70 or $80 bottles of wine (all BDX). Would you agree?

I have been drinking mostly Bordeaux for about 17 years and I always struggle to write very descriptive notes about particular wines. What is it about this wine that makes it such good value?

PS - Did you ever buy the 2000 Lanessan at Flickinger?!

1/27/2023 3:43:00 AM - I agree. At its best, this wine is quite good—and an excellent value. I bought two cases at retail a little over a year ago. I have about half a case left now. The first case was extremely spotty. The second case is much better, but no bottles have risen to the heights of a couple early ones, which were really phenomenal.

You’re right. Good examples of this wine are better than many more expensive bottles. The very best bottle I had was a dead ringer for the ‘09 Cantemerle. I suspect some bad storage in the supply chain had something to do with my bad first case.

Glad to hear you got what Binny’s had while it was on sale. You’ll get some good bottles out of that lot, I’m sure. They also now have the ‘10, but I’m not as taken with that as I was with the ‘09.

No, I’m afraid I never tried those ‘00 Lanessans. I should have, but other purchases distracted me.

    Cheers!
