Wednesday, September 19, 2012 - 2000-2009 vertical of Chateau Pontet-Canet, with Alfred Tesseron (Roberson Wine, South Ken, London): Much like the 2002 it lacks the magic of a good Bordeaux and the 1 hour of decanting took away quite a bit of its “vibrancy” vs when we tried it at the start of the year with almost no decanting. Definitely didn’t help that we tried it with great PC wines like the 01 and 00. Very light on the nose. Good silky tannins on the palate, quite a bit of fruit. The elegance is there but it lacks the magic. Drink sooner than later. 91
For the record 2004 was the first year Pontet-Canet went Organic& Biodynamic.

9/22/2013 11:46:00 AM - As I am reading through your notes on other PC tastings (and very appreciative of your wonderful insight/input) a thought comes into my mind about the amount of "aeration time" that the 2004 and 2002 had at this tasting. While 2002 is known for being a bit green, I have a feeling that the 2004 may have just needed more time to breathe to show its charm which I recall from having it a few years back but don't have any TN's on it. I have seen this inability to open up with only 1 or 2 hours of aeration occur in a broad spectrum of 2004's from both the right and left bank. 2004 can be a very reasonably priced year for PC and Bordeaux in general, so if it is a wine that has more ability to shine, it should be sought out. I will try to revisit the 2004 this year with one of my good PC buddies (Adam or Wade) within the next few months and report back on our findings. It could be a "year to buy" with PC.

9/22/2013 1:23:00 PM - Most of the 04s we tried performed with just a touch of aeriation, Montrose being among the best. Maybe it could use more time than less. Looking fwd to your notes :)
