2002 Dom Pérignon Champagne

Friday, September 23, 2022 - DP 02 is in my humble opinion, well actually in many champagne lovers' view, a bad DP vintage, regardless the hype and price.
We opened a fair share of this wine; not to mention the variation, when it's good, it's like 91-92/100 good. And when it's not good...
This bottle we had, was so reduced that it's almost rubbery. If it's not that it improved a bit in the glass we will rule it as faulty. However, even after some air, it is still not THAT great. There was just some uneasiness about it.

If it was five years ago I might say keep it and wait. But 2002 vintage has been made for 20 years, and there are already falling apart bottles of this wine, I am not sure I have the patient to wait for a promise that might not deliver at all.

DP 06, or DP 04 if the bottles are well kept, are cheaper and give much more pleasure to drink.

Not sure if you've had one lately but I popped a couple over the summer and they were, to me, worse for the wear. And I was a fan of 04 as a solid, early-drinking vintage.

No I haven't had 04 these couple years, I heard my friend, another champagne lover, had his last bottle from a case and it was good.
I did hear around three or four years ago that DP 04 also going downhill. The difference between DP 02 and 04 is that, 02 was not very enjoyable earlier, neither it is enjoyable now. 04 in the contrary, as you said, almost every bottle was lovely at least until five years ago. I wonder if P2 04 would do better?
