96 Points

Monday, October 10, 2016 - 10/10/2016 rated 96 points: From a half-bottle, sampled via Coravin into a Riedel Riesling and Impitoyable Le Taster on September 17 and October 10, 2016. 14 pabv, $180/375 ml; Dorothy Lane Market, Oakwood, OH. Tasted first in honor of my late wife Barbara with our great friends Kurt and Carolyn W. from Columbus.

Full orange with green overtones. Tends to hang on the sides of the glass and takes a long time to form very thin tears.

Aromas are searching and tend to fill the room with scent. Nose is still quite tight but spicy, revealing honied malt, violets, powdered sugar, sweet clove and tarragon, and a profound but as of yet unresolved brothy/meaty bass note. The spiciness with air becomes reminiscent of horehound candy.

The palate is somewhat more forthcoming than the nose, with a complex juiciness, fine balance, and power. The oak is not all absorbed as of yet but isn't prominent.. The texture and mouth-feel are by themselves quite enough to hold all the rest of the elements in place. I'd guess that big texture is in the main due to oak tannins, enhanced with skin tones from the very late picking.

Expected harmonious and revealingly lingering finish. Would advise whatever more cellar time you have the patience for--say 2020 to 2040 at a rough guess; this one has certainly room to grow and is not at its peak yet; of course a 12 year old Yquem is still a baby. However, a joy to drink as it is, and grateful I am that I had it.
