2009 Cayuse Syrah Cailloux Vineyard

98 Points

Thursday, October 9, 2014 - Tasted with four 2010 Reynvaan syrahs, their 2011 cab, two 2009 No Girls, and four other Cayuse. Garnet, mostly opaque. Very pronounced dark fruit aromas, complex but still a bit brooding. Almost seems like cassis-cabernet nose. The flavors are very full-bodied and concentrated, all black fruits, with plenty of alcohol, and some tannin which stays in the background. Excellent balance, though. This was, except for Bionic Frog, the most concentrated wine of the evening. The density, concentration, acidity, and tannin carried through in the aftertaste and just kept going. Despite being five years old and very enjoyable, It's approaching the concentration of the Aussie shirazeses. Either drink it with very flavorful food, or hold it for a couple more years. Outstanding!

10/10/2014 1:40:00 PM - I have some of each of Cayuse's wines, and we probably drink a couple a month, so we get to try them all with some regularity. As a group, the syrahs are our favorite. Cailloux is what we have the most of, so we drink that most often, and it's great. I'd have to say Bionic Frog is my absolute favorite, then Armada and En Chamberlin. I've never opened one of my En Cerise...yet.

10/10/2014 4:45:00 PM - En Cerise is always tasty. I have a very similar collection and just started getting No Girls but haven't tried it yet. I still like Cayuse better than Reynvaan generally as they seem to have more depth and character. But I do love Stonessence. I am looking forward to trying the No Girls and Horsepower. Cheers!
