Sunday, May 7, 2017 - B30; G5; 4*+8*+4*+8.5+8.5+4*+4.5=92+; Very dark, nearly impenetrable red velvet color with very slight oxidizing detectable on the edges where some light gets through! Not highly aromatic, but some overripe cherry and cardboard notes are predominant; mouthfeel is smooth upon entry, then swallowing highlights the tannins and acidity as air is re-established on the tongue. Good depth of flavor with rich cherry and faint menthol. This could really be called "light" for a Petit Sirah. Quite nice from that respect. I imagine this has mellowed considerably over the years as it does not strike me as a particularly well-balanced wine, but it is now nicely integrated and very drinkable with smooth tannin that gives wonderful depth to a long finish. I would not be surprised if well-cellared bottles would have many more years of life left, although I doubt it will improve much and will likely start an oxidizing downhill drift. It was worth my $110 charity auction price. A very nice wine tasting experience of a nearly 18-year old wine that was well-made.
