Wednesday, February 25, 2015 - Dinner at Red Star (Red Star Restaurant): A sweet ending to a nice night. The nose was classic Gewurztraminer, with lychees and flower and spice touched with a noble honeyed glow. There was a whiff of something rubbery in there that I could not quite place my finger on, but otherwise a really nice bouquet. The palate had the sweet, rich unctuousness that one would expect on a good SGN, but all this was nicely balanced by well-integrated acidity. There was a really nice range of flavours too, with subtle pear notes underlying more dominant lychee tones, then a nice sprinkle of osmanthus flowers and a lift of jasmine tea as the wine moved beyond the midpalate and into a long finish flushed with Gewurztraminer spice and lovely mineral notes. Yum. Really nice and drinking quite beautifully now.
