Wednesday, October 5, 2011 - Opened and decanted for about an hour. Deep black cherry color. Nose needed another hour to reveal all its components. All fruit initially with cassis, blueberry and black cherry. Elements of the french oak appeared underneath, with a hint of cedar, leather and even a little graham and hints of vanilla. In the mouth this was one of the most perfectly balanced wines i have ever enjoyed. A burst of fruits, blue and black, followed by a full rich midpalate, and a velvety, yet prolonged grippy finish. Most wines have one out of three, either a great attack or a great finish, most commonly. Occasionally a really well made wine will have two out of three components - incorporating a vivid, full mid-palate along with either a great attack or a great finish. Only very rarely have I been fortunate enough to taste a wine that combined all three components so beautifully, and here, with a perfect acidity carrying all the lush fruit through the midpalate and then handing off seemlessly to the tannins that carried the finish on and on. Maybe my wine of the year. Five years or so and this should be simply breathtaking.
