Teran is an indigenous Slovenian wine, produced on the Carst Plateau, located in the South-West Slovenia and the easternmost part of Friuli-Venezia Giulia region in Italy. Teran is produced from Refosco grape, the difference in name comes from the fact, that because of the specific Karst soil the wine has a greater presence of acidity than a normal wine would. Terans colour is of a deep dark red, almost impenetrable to light, with high presence of tannins. Its aromas are fruity, harmonic, resembling forest fruits. Relatively high content of acids and a slight note of tartness, together with high extract, adds to this wine a typical taste of a full, strong and robust but at the same time pleasantly crafted wine. Because of its characteristic fullness and high contents of polyphenols (tannin, anthocyane) it is considered to have healthy qualities.

The Istrian grape that was allowed by the EU Commision to be called Teran, though this can be denied by historical facts and scientific research, wich conclude that it is not a different species of grape but the same Refosco grape, can be differentiated from Karst teran on the label, because the "Croatian Istra" name must be larger than the "Teran" name.
