After many years of growing grapes and making small lots of wine, Luis Peique and his family established Bodegas Peique in 1999. The winery was built in 2000 and one of the sons, Jorge, who makes wine in Ribera del Duero, took over as winemaker. Jorge got his degree from the famous “Escuela de Viticultura y Enología de Requena” in 1994 and worked for Bodegas Protos (Ribera del Duero) from 1996 to 1998. With just a few vintages under his belt as the winemaker at Peique, the wines have been ranked among the best from Bierzo and are considered some of the most exciting wines made in Spain today. Bodegas Peique is located on the western border of Castilla Y Leon. The vineyards are in the town Valtuille de Abajo. Bierzo has a cool climate with Mediterranean and Atlantic influences. The climate falls between the mild, temperate style of Galicia and the hot, continental uplands of the Duero, with sufficient rainfall and top summer temperature of not much more than 32˚C (90˚F). As a result, the wines have a good balance of fruit and acid. All harvesting is done by hand. There is minimal intervention in the vineyards.
