Information from winery:

The Big John's vineyard was planted in the spring of 1997 on a slight hill facing southwest with a reddish to brown, slightly acidic loam and clay. The placement of the vineyard takes the maximum advantage of the spring, summer and fall path of the sun. With the rows oriented west to east, late afternoon winds help maintain temperatures ideal for Zin.

The climate is typically "continental", which combined with the elevation creates hot, dry days and cool nights. The Zin is the Deaver clone planted on 5BB rootstock.
